Journalist for “Trialeti” Urges Law Enforcers and Public Defender for Help Regarding Being Threatened Over the Phone

February 28, 2007

Nino Chibchiuri, a journalist for TV Radio Company Trialeti, urged the Georgian Prosecutor General, Internal Minister and Public Defender to react on her being threatened over the phone.

According to journalist on February 18, at approximately 7:00 PM a strange woman called her on home telephone. The stranger asked for Nino Chibchiuri and having learnt she was not at home, the woman threatened Chibchiuri’s mother saying: ”Unless your daughter stop, Marlena and Misha will kill her.”

Journalist said that she prepared reportage about high ranking officials from the Shida Kartli region who had purchased luxury cars and arranged comfortable houses at the expense of state budget.

Several days ago, the film crew of the TV Company Trialeti was not allowed into the building of the District Municipality. The guards asked the journalists to produce a pass. But, at the receptionists, where permits are issued, the journalists were told that the passes were not issued to TV Company Trialeti under high ranking officials’ orders.

“I had revealed this fact in my reportage. It is not a first occasion when we were not allowed in the building of the district Administrative Board. And I revealed all similar facts in my reportages,” said Chibchiuri.

Journalist concluded that the abovementioned items became reason to threaten her.

Chibchiuri urges the Prosecutor General Zurab Adeishvili, Internal Ministry Vano Merabishvili and Public Defender Sozar Subari “to react on the fact properly in order to estimate the author of anonymous call; as well as those officials who ordered the woman to threaten her. The journalist urges to punish those people under corresponding articles.”
