Revealing the Facts of Torture and Punishment of Criminals Have Become Difficult in Georgia

Ucha Nanuashvili: Revealing the Facts of Torture and Punishment of Criminals Have Become Difficult in Georgia

“In Georgia, some measures have been taken to prevent the torture; however, it is not enough and not very sufficient too,” said Ucha Nanuashvili, executive director of the Human Rights Information and Documentation Center. According to him the reason for the situation is the lack of public interference in the problem.

Nanuashvili said in his conversation with Media News that the government makes effort to control the process and appoint their candidates to various positions in monitoring councils. Subsequently, non-governmental organizations have least access to monitor the penitentiary system.

Nanuashvili also added that the system is almost closed down. It is a main delay for unbiased monitoring and consequently it is impossible to reveal the facts of torture and criminals are not punished.
