Kakheti Prosecutor’s Office Detained a Former MP for Beating the Director of Radio Station “Hereti”

Kakheti (region in east Georgia) Prosecutor’s Office has finished the investigation of the criminal case concerning the beating and threatening of Director of radio station “Hereti” (Lagodekhi) Ramaz Samkharadze.

According to Ramaz Samkharadze, former MP David Kapanadze and his friend Gia Korghanashvili (who lives in Lagodekhi) were detained by law enforcers on March 17, court ordered them to pay bail.

Kapanadze has to pay 10 thousand GEL and Korghanashvili 5 thousand GEL.

Ramaz Samkharadze was beaten on October 9, 2006. According to preliminary investigation, Kapanadze beat him for the radio story aired by “Hereti” in which Kapanadze’s activities were covered. Korghanashvili is accused of threatening and putting psychological pressure on Samkharadze.
Kakheti Prosecutor’s Office will hold a special briefing at 4 p.m. on March 20.

Ramaz Samkharadze said he didn’t expect the Prosecutor’s Office would solve the case as there were lots of incidents of pressuring and physical abuse of journalists in Kakheti.
