Coalition of Non-governmental Organizations Call upon the Society to React on Violations in the Country

March 22, 2007

“There is a serious crisis in the judiciary,” said representatives from the coalition of the non-governmental organizations “Civil Society-for Democratic Georgia” and call upon the society to react on the violations that exist in the system.

Today, at the press-conference, the heads of the NGOs discussed the famous court hearings, among them the detentions of Jaba JIshkariani, a member of the Egalitarian Institute and fifteen-year-old Giorgi Zerekidze.

According to their estimations, the court passes inadequate verdicts on the abovementioned accused people. The situation has resulted form the absence of independent judiciary system.

Lasha Chkhartishvili, a member of the Egalitarian Institute, said that the judiciary system is seriously suppressed by the executive and legislative governments. Thus, innocent or less guilty people are damaged and real criminals remain unpunished or are not properly charged. In parallel to it, right to free expression is violated.

According to Nana Kakabadze, the head of the “Former Political Prisoners for Human Rights”, the judges turned out to be independent from the law and the public society should resist it.

Nino Tsikhistavi, the head of the “Network for Caucasian Women” said that the coalition would morally fine the government. “We fine the member of the parliamentary majority, Nika Gvaramia, for his statement in which he expressed the will of the state authority in order to suppress the independent media. We fine the government on the whole for the nihilism and fear that it is planting in society,” said Tsikhistavi.

Giorgi Chkheidze, the chairman of the Yong Lawyers Association, thinks that each of us should react on the situation. We must support the expression of free opinion or people who have become victims of the present situation.
