Symbolic Demonstration Against Violence Was Held At The Writers Union

March 23, 2007

Today, white canvas was hung from the balcony of the Georgian Writers Union. Expressions of the Georgian classic writers were written on the canvas.

Demonstrators-writers, artists and famous representatives of the society signed Galaktioni’s words “Our duty is to condemn those who deserve it”.

Makhvala Gnashvili, the chairwoman of the Union said that the reason for Georgian artists to gather was not the pain caused by the fate of only one little Georgian boy or of the mothers who have their sons killed. Georgian intelligence decided to express its opinion regarding the law that has already harassed some art unions and artists as well.

Zura Rtveliashvili, a member of the Egalitarian Institute, who has gone on his hunger strike in the building of the Writers Union, said that human rights are totally violated in Georgia. The judiciary system serves the prosecutor’s office and the government. He stated that the joint demonstration of the art committees and the Egalitarian Institute is a wonderful example of consolidation. He hoped that Georgian intelligence would straighten up and raise its voice against the violators.
