Public Defender Demands to Punish Guilty Policemen

April 17, 2007

Tbilisi. 17.04. 07.Media News. Georgian Public Defender, Sozar Subari, joined the demand to punish the policemen who killed thirty-seven-year-old Aleksandre Khositashvili, a resident of the village of Dighomi.

Subari said that the accident shows the real fault of the policemen and the fact is proved by law enforcers’ effort to reach some deal with the dead man’s family members.

“According to the story retold by Khositashvili’s family members, the policemen really were guilty in the murder. However, unfortunately the murderers are not punished yet,” said Sozar Subari.

The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs reacted on the accident. Yesterday, a representative of the Ministry, Irakli Bazerashvili said at the press-conference that law enforcers, who had taken part in detention of Khositashvili, have their power ceased.

“If the policemen are found guilty, adequate measures will be taken against them,” said Bazerashvili.

On April 13, drunken Aleksandre Bazerashvili broke a window of one of the booths in the village of Dighomi. Consequently he was detained by policemen, According to witnesses, law enforcers assaulted Khositashvili and it resulted into his death.
