Policemen Beat Juvenile Girl to Extort Fraudulent Testimony form Her

April 18, 2007

Seventeen-year-old Mariami was detained by policemen when she was demanding her friend to return her mobile phone. Policemen witnessed the incident quite by chance.

The girl does not consider her guilty and says that it was an ordinary disagreement between friends. However, the policemen demanded her to accuse her friend.

Policemen tried to force the girl make a testimony under physical assault. The girl was medically examined and it showed the trace of physical assault on her body.

Mariam spent that night in the cell of a pre-trial detention setting. On the next day the court fined her with 400 lari for resistance against the policemen.

Regarding the incident, the victim appealed to the Prosecutor’s Office of the Adjara Autonomous Republic ten days ago in vain.

Mariam was judged for hooliganism and served her conditional term.
