Series of Demonstrations Started in Tbilisi

April 25, 2007

With the background of social problems protest demonstrations renewed in Tbilisi. Several demonstrations are being held in the capital in various places. The demonstrators’ demands are different, though of the same character. Although the demonstrations turned into political ones and some of demonstrators demanded the president’s resignation, the demonstrators say that it was caused by the fact that the government deprives them form all chances to survive.

People use to gather in front of the Parliament, Tbilisi City Hall and the Ministry of Healthcare and Social Welfare everyday. They are holding banners and megaphones. The organizer of the demonstration in front of the Parliament is Koba Davitashvili, member of the Tbilisi Municipality. His supporters demand to renew the allowances on disabled people, veterans and people of other categories.  They also demand to stop the harassment of private property. Jondi Baghaturia, former member of the Leiborist Party is an organizer of the demonstration in front of the City Hall. His supporters protest the draft law which envisages the taxes on inhabitants in historical districts. The organizer of the third demonstration is Irakli Petriashvili, the chairman of the Georgian Trade union. He demands the Ministry of Healthcare to renew the allowances that were granted to pregnant women and mothers with many children in the past.

Despite bad weather, the demonstrators gather everyday. They demand the government to create the minimum conditions of living for them. Otherwise they do not want to be Georgian citizens any more.
