Presentation of Documentary on Law Enforcers’ Illegal Activities Held

May 25, 2007

On May 24 the presentation of the movie on illegal activities of law enforcement bodies produced by Studio Monitor was held at “Kinos Sakhli”.

Nino Zuriashvili and Alxandre Kvatashidze are the authors of a 22-minute movie.

The movie reveals Irakli Kodua, chief of the Ministry of Internal Affairs' Special Operations Department (SOD), having arrested three people through unjust accusations. Due to the journalism investigation the detained men were tortured to obtain convictions.

Nanuka Zhorzholiani, former reporter at TV Company Rustavi 2 and present head of Information Center on NATO, is involved in the scandal.

In accordance with the movie a personal revenge motivated Irakli Kodua to arrest Lasha Khorguani and two more young men.

Before the presentation, on May 22, the public defender spread a special statement according to which “as a result of materials studied and circumstances revealed, the signs of crime from the side of SOD chief and staff are undisguised”.

The presentation of the movie was attended by the opposition party leaders, MPs, Public Defender’s Office representatives.

After the presentation David Zurabishvili, Chairman of the opposition parliament faction - Democratic Front commented that there is more than enough evidence for charging Kodua.

As regards Nanuka Zhorzholiani, unless being the accomplice of the crime, she is supposed to leave her position at least.
“It is inconceivable the head of Information Centre on NATO were sacrificing people to her own caprice” – Zurabishvili stated.

The opposition, according to the leader of the faction, intends to give deep resonance to the case.

On May 24 the opposition parliament factions held a joint press conference at the legislative body and demanded on thorough and objective investigation of the case. The opposition appealed to the press to cover this fact to the highest extent.
