Chairman of the Gori Municipality Raids Organizations

July 4, 2007

Today, certain people, dressed in civil forms, visited shops, supermarkets, salons and various organizations in Gori. They were explaining to the directors of the organizations that they were collecting money-30-50 tetri for a square meter-for reconstruction of the city.

One of those visitors appeared at the Human Rights Center’s Gori Office. He demanded the information about the name, space, bank and tax requisites of the organization.

The person dressed in civil form was demanding registration and collection of the money without producing any official document. When we asked him to show the document according to which he was collecting money, he produced the resolution of Marlen Nadiradze, the chairman of the Gori Municipality.

The resolution, which had neither Municipality seal nor the signature of the chairman on it, stated how much certain kind of organizations should pay.

We got in touch with Vasil Makharashvili, Gori Municipality Governor, regarding the incident. He promised us to find out the situation. They told us at the Gori Municipality Press-Service Center that the resolution was really prepared and those people were acting legally.
