July 5, 2007

Political scientist, Paata Zakareishvili arrived in Zugdidi to meet young generation. However he was not allowed to hold meeting in the hall of the City Library and Art Gallery.

The meeting was organized by youth organization “Young Generation for Civil Initiatives”. The aim of the meeting was to discuss Abkhaz problem with the scientist. Guram Chikhladze, the chairman of the non-governmental organization, said that he had warned the employees of the library about the meeting, though they refused to hold meeting in the hall today. “We met representatives of the library several days ago and they agreed us to give the hall. However, today they refused us, we were not allowed in the gallery either,” said Chikhladze.

Zakareishvili claimed that his constitutional rights were violated and added that he would inform representatives of the European Union about the incident.

Later on, the meeting was held in the office of the non-governmental organization, “Atinati”. The meeting was supported by the European Union. Zakareishvili stated that the EU is eager to encourage  the activity of the civil population as well as discussion of the problems which are tabooed for society.

Similar meetings were held in several cities of Imereti Region, in Kutaisi, Tskaltubo and Samtredia.
