Police Encouraged People to Attack Human Rights Center

July 12, 2007

Today, at 12:50 PM, relatives of Giorgi Gvelukashvili broke into the Human Rights Center’s Kakheti office and insulted employees of the center. On July 7, twenty-six-year-old Giorgi Gvelukashvili disappeared in the village of Dzirkoki in the Gurjaani District. Relatives of the lost man tried to break equipment in the office and to assault journalist too.

The relatives of Giorgi Gvelukashvili got furious because of information spread by various TV Companies regarding the disappearance of the young man. On July 10 the Human Rights Center spread that information which stated that preliminary investigation was launched on the fact under the Georgian Criminal Code Article 115. The article envisages bringing a person to the point of suicide. In addition to that, the center blamed police for having involved the investigation late.

Before breaking into the non-governmental organization, relatives of Gvelukashvili visited Shota Bezhanishvili, the head of the Internal Ministry’s Gurjaani Department. Bezhanishvili demanded the coordinator of the organization to deny initial information but the representative of the NGO refused him because of groundless demands.

Human Rights Center considers that the police encouraged the furious people to make out the situation with the organization in this violent method. It must be pointed out that despite urgent demands of the Human Rights Center, the policemen arrived at their office only after the quarrel had finished.

Human Rights Center is deeply concerned regarding the incident and assesses it as a harassment of the employees for its regional office. The center calls upon corresponding bodies to react on the situation.
