Newspaper “Imedi” Against Sagarejo District Governor

July 17, 2007

Kakheti regional newspaper “Imedi” demands the Sagarejo District Governor to apologize to them. According to Albina Abramova, the editor of the newspaper, Garsevan Bukhnikashvili, the governor, insults the correspondents for regional independent media sources.

“Several days ago, Sagarejo District Governor called the correspondent for the newspaper “Imedi” impolite, impudent and provocateur. The latter asked the public official to make comments on the complaints of Sagarejo population about Oil Company “Canargo-Georgia” and local authority. We can produce the audio record of the incident when the governor was abusing the journalist. It was not the first fact when Bukhnikashvili mistreated independent journalists. Some time ago he expelled Mishiko Lazashvili, correspondent from Sagarejo, from the administrative board meeting. Gia Natsvlishvili, Kakheti Regional Gubernator protects the district governor. We do not exclude the possibility that the journalists were harassed according to the gubernator’s directives. Otherwise, the governor should have been rebuked for the incident,” said the editor of the newspaper.

Abramova said that the editorial board demands the Sagarejo District Governor to apologize to their staff. They have already mentioned their demand in their petition to the governor. Unless their requirements are satisfied, the newspaper “Imedi” is going to appeal to the court against the Sagarejo District governor and demand the reimbursement for moral damage.

Sagarejo District Governor refused the Human Rights Center to make any comments on the situation.
