Regional Journalists Joined Open Letter to Georgian President

July 19, 2007

On July 17 newspaper “Resonance” published open letter to the Georgian President. Representatives of the Tbilisi based media sources requested the President to veto the amendments introduced to the Law on Common Court. Regional journalists joined the open letter too.

Nearly forty representatives of twenty regional media sources signed the letter. They are: Kakheti regional newspapers “Imedi”, “Spektri”, Telavi TV Company “Tanamgzavri”, TV Company “Gurjaani”, newspaper “Batumelebi” (Batumi Dwellers); TV Company “TV Channel 25”, Batumi; TV Company “Trialeti”, Gori; “Khalkhis Gazeti” (People’s Newspaper), Gori; “Postscriptum”, Kutaisi; “Akhali Gazeti” (New Newspaper), Kutaisi; “Kutaisuri Versia” (Version in Kutaisi Way); newspaper “Media Tribuna”, Foti, etc.

The letter signed by the journalists will be delivered at the President’s Administration by 4:00 PM today.

Regional journalists said that the amendments to the Law on Common Court shall restrict the freedom of expression. It should be pointed out that the prohibition of photo-video-shooting at court hearings will prevent regional journalists to get any kind information. There are no spokesmen in District Courts.

Unless their demands are satisfied, regional media sources will apply to international organizations for help.

Gela Mtivlishvili, Kakheti
