Public Defender Demands To Protect the Confidentiality of Juvenile offenders

July 19, 2007

Public Defender, Sozar Subari, proposed a new initiative that aims to create legislative sources to protect the rights of juvenile offenders.

Subari stated that Georgian media sources have actively broadcast the facts of juvenile crimes recently. While revealing similar facts, organizations should take into consideration the Convention of the Rights of the Child and protect the confidentiality of juveniles.

Today, Public Defender organized a round table regarding the issue where representatives of various human rights organizations, psychologists, representatives of the Prosecutor General’s Office and Ministry of Education took part.

The Public Defender defined that unethical treatment of juvenile offenders has no analogy in civilized society and even more, it contradicts Georgia’s responsibilities to protect the confidentiality of juvenile offenders.

According to Subari’s initiative, in order to get rid of identification of juvenile criminals, the legislation on media activities should be regulated.

The Ombudsman thinks that legal or physical entity might be condemned for having breached above-mentioned ethic norms.

The Public Defender is going to introduce the Georgian Parliament with the draft law.
