United Opposition Blames Government for Persecution

December 7, 2007
Leaders of the United Opposition blame the government for breaching the legislation during pre-election campaign.

Jondi Baghaturia, members of the General Public Council, stated that Zaza Mechiauri, the head of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti election staff of their presidential candidate, Levan Gachechiladze, was abused and blackmailed. Officials even tried to bribe him.

Salome Zurabishvili, United Opposition’s candidate for Prime-Minister’s position, said that the Chamber of Control discovered some documents according to the government’s order. “The documents demonstrate that I was taking journalists abroad during official visits while I was a Minister of Foreign Affairs; they claim it was a crime,” said Zurabishvili.

Opposition leaders also stated at the briefing that the election staff of their candidate was forced out from the office in Abasha.

Oppositionists claim that the list of violations committed by the authority is too long and the government commits similar crimes in almost every region of Georgia.
