Riot Police Dispersed Activists of the Republic Party

January 4, 2008

Today, in the morning at approximately 5:00 AM riot policemen dispersed activists of the Republic Party and Davit Batsikadze, a member of the Supreme Council of the Adjara Autonomous Republic. Twelve activists were putting up the posters of the presidential candidate Levan Gachechiladze on the wall of the house in Rustaveli Street # 10.

“Representatives of other parties can put up posters but we cannot. Three cars and one mini-bus stopped near us and nearly thirty riot policemen got out of them. They beat us with truncheons. I told them I was member of the Supreme Council but in reply they hit me with truncheon.”

Neither patrol police nor the security guard of governmental bodies (like Supreme and High Councils, and Constitutional Court) reacted on the incident though were standing nearby.

Activist Tengiz Agvilava was taken to the hospital. He had his muscles injured and was soon discharged from the hospital. Another activist has brain concussion. Investigator of the third division of the Batumi Police Department interrogated activists as victims.
