CEC Cannot Understand the Complaints of Observers

January 5, 2008
Natalia Chkheidze, the spokesperson of the Central Election Commission, considers it is strange when observers request to give press-conferences at the media-centre of the CEC and states that similar precedents have never occurred in the world. In addition to that Natalia Chkheidze stated in her conversation with the Medianews that journalists actively work in the media-centre and it is pretty over-crowded. Thus giving press-conferences there would be difficult for observers too.

Observers applied to the media-centre of the non-governmental organizations with the similar request. Those non-governmental organizations, which plan to observe the presidential elections, are Georgian Young Lawyers Association, Fair Elections, New Generation-New Initiative and Transparency International -Georgia.

Giorgi Chkheidze, the chairman of the Georgian Young Lawyers Association, defined that the media-centre was established for above-mentioned NGOs and no other organization as well as international observers will be allowed to give press-conferences at their centre.

Representatives of the international experts gave press-conference at the hotel “Zip” where they discussed pre-election campaign and expressed their sorrow for not being able to hold press-conference at the media-centre. They called upon the CEC to draw more attention to the problem.
