Who was Trying to Blow up the Office of the United Opposition?

January 10, 2008
In the morning of January 6th, before opposition members held a protest demonstration on Rike the explosives were found at the head office of the United Opposition.

As opposition members state they noticed the explosives from the window of their office and Gia Tortladze neutralized it.

At 4 p.m., January 3rd an explosive was thrown at the house of the presidential candidate Levan Gachechiladze's parents-in-law. Consequently, the window glasses of the house smashed.

As Kakha Kukava, one of the United Opposition's leaders said the explosive was rather strong.

"It was not an ordinary torch but a strong explosive", said Kukava. He is sure that these two incidents are interconnected and the representatives of the Special  Operative Department (SOD) are involved in both incidents.

"Nobody else could have done it. Usually such activities are conducted either by the representatives of Special Operative Department (SOD) or by Constitutional Security Department ( CSD). The incident at the head office of the opposition occurred in the morning, the day before yesterday. But the investigator traditionally does not hurry to start the investigation. The crime scene was examined but the investigation did not follow further legal procedures. Nobody was questioned. If somebody else had done it the investigator would have conducted the investigation at least for the sake of interest."

Kakha Kukava thinks that the discovery of the explosive deliberately coincided with the rally on Rike.

" It is nothing more than an attempt to shift  the attention. The aim of such provocations is to change the direction of political processes. It is Saakashvili's strategy. He is trying to kill political processes in Georgia and bring the county back  to the period of Mkhedrioni ( a paramilitary organization at the beginning of 1990s) by making explosions, secret records and by meeting people in the streets and intimidating them."

According to the news agencies the material that was found at the United Opposition head office was taken by the representatives of the Criminal Police for examination. Though Zurab Gvenetadze, head of Criminal Police Press Department refuses to answer our questions. The only thing he told us was : call Shota Khizanishvili. Shota khizanishvili who is the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) Press Department does not answer our calls at all.
