Public Defender Requests Georgian President to Pardon Shalva Ramishvili

January 28, 2008
On January 28 Georgian Public Defender, Sozar Subari, made a TV-announcement about having sent a petition to the President Mikheil Saakashvili where he requested to pardon journalist Shalva Ramishvili, who was founder of the TV Station “202” (it was closed down in autumn 2006).

Public Defender pointed our during his TV statement on “Rustavi 2” that Shalva Ramishvili, who started a new epoch in Georgian journalism, is not a dangerous person for the civil society; besides that he has already served half term of his sentence. Today, wife of Shalva Ramishvili and public defender will appeal to the Penitentiary Department and request to meet the prisoner.

Ramishvili was arrested on August 27 2005; he was accused for extorting money from MP Koba Bekauri. Another founder of the TV Station “202”, Davit Kokhreidze, was arrested with him too.

Tbilisi Civil Court sentenced Ramishvili to four-year-imprisonment on March 29 2006. As for Kokhreidze, he had to spend three years in prison; but, last year President pardoned Davit Kokhreidze and he was released from detention establishment.
