Museum of Nato Vachnadze Might Be Closed Down

February 4, 2008
Gurjaani Municipality Council intends to close down the Museum of Nato Vachnadze, famous Georgian actress. The Human Rights Center learned about the intention during the council meeting today.

Several members of the council announced the initiative to close down the museum of Nato museum Vachnadze. The reason for their intention was the following: Nato Vachnadze’s museum like other museums in Georgia do not have visitors. “How long can we fund museums from the budget? They can not fund themselves so we discuss the liquidation of museums”, stated Gia Enukidze, the chairperson of the Culture, Sport and Education Committee within the Municipality Council.

The initiative was also supported by other members of the council though because non-governmental organizations protested the idea the discussion of the question was postponed.

It is noteworthy that Gurjaani Municipality Council liquidated libraries and cultural houses in the villages.

The salaries of the employees at the Municipality Council were increased at the expense of the abolishment of cultural establishments.
