Labor Party Demands to Release Their Members from Imprisonment

February 5, 2008
Labor Party delivered ultimatum to the Georgian government and demanded to release their members from imprisonment who were arrested on November 7 2007.

“During November 7 events people were arrested and then sentenced to two-month pre-trial detention for introduction of mass public disorder under the Georgian Criminal Code, Article 225. These people cannot be judged under this law. Two months have passed but they are not released yet,” said Ioseb Shatberashvili, Secretary General of the Labor Party at the press-conference today.

“Organized mass public disorder means violence, dispersal, setting fire, using weapon or explosive materials, armed resistance to law enforcers that shall be punished by the imprisonment from 6 to 7 years,’ said Shatberashvili.

He added that the detainees did not use weapon or explosive machines; consequently their detention is illegal and they are political prisoners.

Labor Party reported that nearly 30 people were arrested on November 7. Six of them are members of the Labor Party and these people are treated with particular aggression.

Unless the detainees are released within ten days, the Labor Party will announce the names of these people as well as of those officials who ordered to arrest them.
