Opposition Camp holds large-scaled protest in Tbilisi

February 15, 2008
Today in front of the Parliament the United Opposition will gather to hold mass protest a demonstration that is to last for the next 10 days.  This action is organized in response to the violent crackdown on human rights in Georgia on the 7th of November and allegations of widespread voting fraud in the snap-presidential elections in January of 2008, especially in some precincts.

Zviad Dzidziguri, MP of the Parliament of Georgia and a member of the United National Movement National Council, told Medianews, (a Georgian news agency), how the opposition is expecting 100, 000 supporters to show up for their rally.

The turnout will represent a cross section of Georgian society. Representatives of the NGO sector, University professors, students and representatives from all layers of the society will be in attendance.

The opposition issued a memorandum outlining 17 key demands to government. The most important among the demands includes a call for a recount the election results from the snap presidential election that was held on January 5, 2008, especially for those districts were many doubts have been raised about the integrity of the vote count; the release of political prisoners, an investigation of the violent dispersal of the November 7 rally, the dismissal of Vano Merabishvili, Minister of Interior of Georgia as well as  Levan Tarkhnishvili, Head of Central Election Commission of Georgia.

Zviad Dzidziguri states that the government has not follow through in upholding their demands.
“They allege that they had satisfied our demands as outlined in the memorandum but it is actually a lie”, says Dzidziguri.  The Tbilisi City Hall sanctioned the opposition to conduct rallies from February 15, 2008 and running to February 26, 2008 and a permit has been issued for this purpose.

However, Zviad Dzidziguri states that the National Council of the United Opposition has not agreed to the terms of plan or accepts the schedule provided for street protests.
