Gurjaani Threatened with Epidemics

February 21, 2008

There may be a public health crisis with a possible epidemic facing Gurjaani. The Human Rights Center has learned about the situation from the Gurjaani Municipality Council.

The yard of the Gurjaani Public School # 2, where the central sewage system is located, is polluted with an overflow of human waste for already now several months and the end of the problem is not in sight.

The school administration reported that they cannot give lessons on those days that the city is supplied with drinking water because teachers and pupils cannot enter the yard because of the sewage overflow. Supposedly, the human waste pipes leak and that contaminants the supply of drinking water. Residents of Ketskhoveli and Rustaveli Streets have also confirmed the severity of the situation.  The locals claim that they have applied to Gurjaani Municipality Council for help but all their efforts have been without result. The district administration does not deny that Gurjaani is threatened with epidemics.

Unless the problem is resolved urgently, Gurjaani Public School # 2 might stop education process and a public health crisis looms.
