Opposition: Hunger-Strike Starts Tomorrow

Leaders of the United Public Movement in opposition to the Georgian government started making preparations for the hunger-strike that is planned on February 22. They have already set up tents in the Rike embankment in Tbilisi.

Jondi Baghaturia, leader of the political party “Georgian Assembly” said in his interview with Medianews that starting tomorrow that hunger-strikers will begin protesting in five Georgian cities other than Tbilisi. Opposition will set up tents in front of the Georgian Parliament’s building in Tbilisi,

Jondi Baghaturia said that if Georgian government prefers to turn the capital into a city of tents at the expense of releasing 43 prisoners and resigning Levan Tarkhnishvili from his position of the chairperson of the Central Election Commission. They understand that their protest may be faced with a similar response to earlier protests. 

As for the legality of holding protests, demonstration opposition leaders plan to again make an application to the Tbilisi City Hall within the next five days in order to be granted official permission to hold the protest rallies. Regardless, they claim that the law does not prohibit them from hold peaceful demonstrations under the Constitution.

Baghaturia reported that a group of doctors have voluntarily joined the National Council who wishes to provide the demonstrators with medical assistance in case of problems and unforeseen medical emergencies.

Eka Beselia, the chairperson of the “Movement for United Georgia” said in her interview with Medianews that over 200 people will join in the hunger-strike that is to commence tomorrow.  

It is expected practically every leader of the opposition to the government will participate in the hunger strike tomorrow. Former presidential candidate Levan Gachihcalidze from National Council also intends to join with hunger-strikers in making their demands known.
