March 31, 2008

The Lawyer for the Human Rights Center demands to launch criminal prosecution on Otar Dighmelashvili, the deputy head of the Sighnaghi Police Department.

Reportedly, on March 1 2008 Otar Dighmelashvili, together with other policemen assaulted Gela Kutibashvili and this crime resulted in  physical injuries. Aside from Kutibashvili being  arrested, the court sentenced him in to seven days in jail for resisting arrest.

Sighnaghi District Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation on the incident.  However, Lia Khuroshvili, the lawyer for the Human Rights Center and Kutibashvili’s attorney reported that Dighmelashvili, a high -ranking official of the police department, misuse of  power and influence impacting the investigation. Instead of being punished under the law Dighmelashvili is able to maintain his position at the police department. Moreover, he continues to interfere with the investigation and the rights of the alleged victims.
