Appeals Court Did Not Satisfy the Suit of Giorgadze’s Supporters

April 29, 2008

Today, Tbilisi’s Appeals Court did not satisfy the suit of Igor Giorgadze’s supporters. Prisoners were appealing against the verdict of the Tbilisi City Court.

Irina Sairshvili, the leader of the political union “Imedi”, stated at the court building that they expected the court to make a similar decision. The court only read the resolution component of the verdicts and extremely quickly and in a very low voice. She did not satisfy any suits. The court did not change any illegal verdicts of the twelve prisoners who were supporting Igor Giorgadze.

Irina Sarishvili intends to bring the suit to the Supreme Court and simultaneously appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.

Twenty-nine supporters of the former Security Minister were arrested on September 6, 2006 and were blamed for taking part in organizing a coup against the government. After being interrogated, 15 of them were released and 13 were sent to prison, of which Maia Nikoleishvili was given a reduced sentence.

The Tbilisi City Court sent Maia Tofuria to prison for eight and a half years; Kakha Kantaria for eight years; Temur Jorjoliani and Ramaz Samnidze for seven years; Revaz Bulia, Guram Papukashvili, Iakob Kvinivkadze, Giorgi Akhobadze, Zaza Davitaia and Vakhtang Talakhadze for four and half years; Giorgi Metreveli will spend four years and Valeri Galdava - three and half years.

As for the thirteenth convicted - Genadi Archvadze, he remains wanted; though an eight-year-imprisonment was imposed on him without his presence at the court.
