Sagarejo District Governor Insulted Journalists

April 29, 2008

Human Rights Centre demands that a criminal case be opened against Gia Chalatashvili, Sagarejo District Governor.

The centre was informed from Kakheti that on April 26 the governor became angered by the decision of journalists and members of the jury, who named a team from Gurjaani as the winner of the competition within the Anti Narcotics Demonstration. The decision was made at the Culture Centre of the village of Velistsikhe.

After the editor of the regional newspaper “Imedi” published the jury’s decision, Gia Chalatashvili and other officials of the district’s authorities attacked journalists and tried to assault them. In the presence of audience, Georgian and foreign guests, the governor and his companions were cursing journalists and resisted police officers who tried to prevent the hooliganism.

After the incident, according to the direction of the Sagarejo District Governor, unknown people called the journalists and threatened them with damage to their health.
