Owners of Damaged Property to protest in front of United National Movement’s Election Headquarters of the

April 29, 2008

Manana Macharashvili, Tamar Tarashvili and other inhabitants of Signagi are planning to start protest actions outside the HQ of the United National Movement in the near future.

Manana Macharashvili told the Human Rights Center that the statement of the Kakheti governor served as the reason to begin the protest. “We met the governor and he told us that the real estate in Signagi’s downtown area has been transferred to the state by Levan Vasadze. This is the real estate we were demanding to be reinstated. The Ministry of Economic development will sell this estate soon and we, the former owners can buy it,” stated Macharashvili.

Last year Macharashvili and several other businesspersons were forced by the former governor of Signagi Municpality, deputy Kakheti governor and other officials to sell their commercial holdings in Signagi to Tamaz Davlianidze, a plenipotentiary of the businessman of Levan Vasadze. The purchase was conducted at midnight, while officers of Financial Police took Manana Macharashvili to a notary house by force. The officers threatened to throw her in prison, thus Macharashvili was forced to sign a document that explains the selling her property.

Macharashvili and other property owners that lost their property addressed the Office of Prosecutor General.  The investigation was launched but in vain.

According to the preliminary information the representatives of Kakheti NGOs will join the protesters.
