A Young Representative of the United Opposition Beaten

June 3, 2008

Nona Tsagareishvili, 21 an activist of the United Opposition was beaten at her house at 11 p.m. last night.

The victim stated that two men in black were waiting for her on the third floor of the apartment building where she lives. The strangers tried to strangle  her with a rope and beat her. Nona Tsagareishvili says that the strangers were demanding that she leave the oppositional party otherwise she would be killed. One of the assaulters even took out a knife and threatened her.

Irakli Melashvili, a member of the United Opposition visited Nona Tsagareishvili in the Tbilisi Eighth Hospital. The girl has one broken finger on her left hand, disjointed shoulder, a trace of the rope and  multiple injuries on the body.

The oppositional leaders think that this incident is politically based.  Irakli Melashvili told Medianews that Nona Tsagareishvili was a commision member from the United Opposition in the Mtskheta district during the parliamentary election May 21, 2008. She gave several interviews to the media about what had actually taken place in the elections.

Melashvili states that after the election Tsagareishvili was receiving threatening text messages that said that she would be killed. ” This is just one more instance of an order of the government that  will have negative results for the government itself,” concludes  Melashvili.
