Church of Godmother Might Be Made into Mosque

June 4, 2008

The church of Godmother situated in the village of Jokolo in Pankisi Valley might face a serious problem. Lado Tskhadadze, resident of the valley, reported that the church might soon be made into a mosque.

The article on the situation was published by the regional newspaper “Progress”.

Tskhadadze reported to the newspaper that religious services are not carried out in the church at the moment.

“The services were held only on religious holidays but the door of the church has been locked for one year already. Thus, local Kists wish to make it into a mosque,” said Lado Tskhadadze.

Reportedly, Leila Legashvili, the head of the Culture Department of Akhmeta District Administration, supports the idea.

“The fact that the church might be made into a mosque, can be confirmed by Leila Legahsivili’s verbal decision based on which the church loses its function,” said Tskhadadze.

Leila Begashvili denies the accusations and states church will not be made into a mosque; it is absurd.
