Opposition Demands Case Review of Hunger Striking Female Prisoners

June 12, 2008

The United Opposition and the NGOs that work on the human rights in Georgia express their solidarity for hunger striking women from Prison # 5 of the Penitentiary Department under the Ministry of Justice. The Opposition and the NGOs demand that there be a review of their cases.

Davit Gamkrelidze, the leader of the Untied Opposition states that 63 women are  hunger striking in Prison # 5. “We take notice of their demands and express our solidarity with them. We also call upon the government to review their criminal cases. Violence has become common for Georgia since the Rose Revolution. These people are unfairly in prison.

We call upon international organizations, especially the Council of Europe to give an unbiased evaluation as to current events in Georgia, including the issues of women who are striking. Non governmental organizations and the United Opposition try to their best to put an end to Saakashvili’s (the president of Georgia), Merabishvili’s (Minister of Interior Affairs of Georgia) and Kezerashvili’s (the Defense Minister of Georgia) illegal regime. We will force the government to become more humane to illegally sentenced people,” stated Davit Gamkrelidze.

The representatives of Georigan NGOs-Former Political Prisoners for the Human Rights, Caucasus Women’s Net, The Association of the Attorneys of Georgia and Motherhood, expressed their solidarity to hunger striking female prisoners.

Nana Kakabadze, one of the active human rights protector states that the number of hunger striking women prisoners increases every day. “We have 800-odd women prisoners in Georgia. The majority of them were convicted by politically controlled courts and illegally. I demand that there be a review of their cases and that they be released from prison on allowed out on early parole. The women prisoners are hunger striking in Batumi as well,” states Nana Kakabadze.
