Construction Workers of Kvakhvreli Public School Plan Labor Action

June 16, 2008

The constructors of village Kvakhvreli Public School, Gori District are planning to go on strike. The grinders have already expressed their wish to stop working in the form of a protest.

The school constructors told the Human Rights Centre that Ltd. “GM Tbilisi,” which is a construction company that won the tender for reconstructing Kvakhvreli Public School does not pay them the amount of salary they had initially agreed.

The stone grinders had been promised 8 Gel per one sq. meter. However, they received only 5 GEL. Other workers get 10 GEL per day in stead of the promised 15 GEL.

The representatives of the constructing company state that the workers are remunerated under the terms of the contract. The issue is that the remuneration terms are not indicated in the constructors’ contracts at all. The contracts say that payment will be given according to personal agreement between workers and the company. The workers indicate that the company representatives infringed an oral agreement.

The administration of Ltd. “GM Tbilisi” hired locals for the reconstruction of Kvakhvreli Public School for a rather low price.

312 pupils study in Kvakhvreli Public School. The school building was first built in 1939.
