Javier Solana Dissatisfied with Level of Democracy in Georgia

Giorgi Popkhadze, Georgian journalist who lived in France, reported that Javier Solana, High Commissionaire at the European Union is dissatisfied with the level of democracy that currently in Georgia and he criticized Mikheil Saakashvili, Georgian President, in his interviews with Georgian and Russian editions of French Radio. He condemned the violation of human rights in Georgia, and he also remarked that presidential and parliamentary elections in Georgia were conducted with serious violations. “The country has new political prisoners and media sources have gradually become influenced by authorities,” said Solana.

Popkhadze reported to the Medianews that Javier Solana was surprised at the Georgian interpretation of Saakashvili’s recent visit because in fact his meeting with the Georgian president was too short and after that Saakashvili left the building of the Council of Europe.

Georgian journalist added that the high commissionaire of the EU was also discontent with the conversation. He stated that Mikheil Saakashvili was not invited to the EU Summit, as it was announced by Georgian Media sources. Both the Georgian president and the Ukrainian Prime-Minister attended the summit of European Public and Social Parties.

“Our meeting was very short and it carried protocol character. More precisely, it aimed to support the dialogue with Georgia,” said Javier Solana in his interview with Giorgi Popkhadze.

Georgian Mikheil Saakashvili and Iulia Timoshenko, Ukrainian Prime-Minister attended the summit of European Public parties several days before. Javier Solana also received them for a second time.
