Villager in Lower Gali District Need to Access Food Products

July 10, 2008

Residents of the villages in lower zone of the Gali district urge Georgian government for assistance. They have requested that the bridge over Enguri River be opened so that the villages can be supplied with food products.

Locals state the bridge on the Enguri River linking the village Otobaia of Gali district and the village Orsantia of Zugdidi district was locked two weeks ago and they have had no access food since that time.

They reported to the Abkhaz Media-Center that Chechen and Abkhaz militants have replaced the Russian peacekeepers who were previously deployed in Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone. Russian peacekeepers are now redeployed at the divide between the villages of Otobaia and Ganmukhuri.

The villagers also reported that recently they are hearing gunshots and explosions in the village of Otobaia almost every night. Consequently they are seriously concerned the on-going situation and how it impact their lives and safety.
