NGOs Protest Deputy Internal Minister Appointment as Kakheti’s Regional Governor

July 15, 2008

Kakheti based NGOs are protesting the potential appointment of Gia Lortkipanidze, deputy Internal Minister as their new regional governor. Representatives of the Kakheti based NGOs state that if Lortkipanidze occupies the position the long-established police regime will even that much more reinforced in the Kakheti region.

Reportedly, Davit Lortkipanidze, brother of Gia Lortkipanidze is the head of the Kakheti Division of the Constitutional Security Department within the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Gia Lortkipanidze was offered on the position since Giorgi Ghviniashvili, chairperson of the Agricultural Committee of the Parliament, refused to accept the position as the Regional Governor.

According to perceived disinformation, Giorgi Sibashvili is another candidate for the regional governor. Sibashvili served previously as the head of election HQ of the National Movement for the May 21 Parliamentary Elections. Before that he was the Gurjaani district governor. Currently he runs a private legal practice.

NGOs plan to organize protest demonstrations in front of the Kakheti Regional Administration building if deputy internal minister should be actually appointed on the position.

Gela Mtivlishvili, Kakheti
