Tskhinvali, South Ossetian Region, Cutoff of Drinking Water by Georgian Farmers

July 28, 2008

Because of the willful actions of ethnic Georgians in the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict zone Tskhinvali does not have drinking water, - stated Vladimir Ivanov, the assistant to the Head of Russian Peacekeepers in the conflict zone.

He states that Tskhinvali was left without drinking water because the Georgian population in the conflict zone arbitrarily cuts water channels from the central water supply system to their agricultural plots.

A group of Russian peacekeepers, the OSCE representatives, Georgian and Ossetian experts had been monitoring the Edisi-Tskhinvali water system for 3-4 years 2 days ago and found 16 illegal taps  in the drinking water system on the territory between Zemo Achabeti and Sveri, stated Ivanov have been noted and this is diverting the water illegally and reducing what is left to be supplied for the population for drinking and other residential use.

He also stated that the sides agreed that the brigades will fix the damages of the water in the near future and Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia separatist republic would soon have its drinking water supply restored.
