August 27, 2008

Georgian Public Defender Sozar Subari petitioned to Georgian president to pardon Marina K. an inmate of the Tbilisi Woman and Juvenile Custody # 5 that falls under the supervision of Penitentiary Department within the Ministry of Justice.

Public Defender is confident that Georgian president will take into consideration the tragedy of the family of Marina K. and allow her to personally take care of her two children.

Marina K. has four children. In 2003, her six-year-old son Giorgi K. died of poisoning because the child had to gather food rubbish damp because of their extreme poverty.

On August 10 2006 Marina K. was arrested for having stolen scrap-iron of 259 GEL from the train-carriages of Georgian Railway department. She was sentenced to four years in prison. Her three children were being brought up at the family of her husband’s aunt Tsira Kh. and at grandmother’s Vara K. On August 8 2008, when Gori was bombed by Russian aircrafts, the house of Vara K (Khakhutashvili Street # 4, Gori) was destroyed; consequently, Vara K and Marina K’s 13-year-old son,. Merab K died at the scene of the incident.  It is still impossible to recover their bodies from the ruins. As a result of the bombardment, four-year-old Lika K has burns on her body.

After such a terrible tragedy, two children of Marina K. are left without anyone to care for her. Public Defender considers himself obliged to appeal to the Georgian President to pardon Marina K.
