Teachers’ Trade Union Protesting Declaration of Academic Year in Kindergartens

September 5, 2008

The Teachers’ Trade Union protests against announcing upcoming year in nursery homes as being academic in purpose.

Kindergarten teachers have found out that this year is declared academic for nursery homes.

Manana Ghurchumelidze, president of Teachers’ Trade Union held a press conference today and stated that her trade union is against ousting IDPs from kindergartens and settling them in the IDP camps in cities. She is also against shutting the kindergartens down for one year. However, she says there is a way out the situation. The Teachers’ Trade Union states that the Tbilisi schools can work in two shifts. Some of IDPs can be replaced from nursery homes to schools. Hence, there will be enough space for both IDPs and children at schools, as well in the kindergartens. Therefore, nursery houses and schools would be able to start working at the same time.

Manana Ghurchumelidze states that if children do not go to nursery homes for two months their parents who work will be paralyzed because assumedly, most of them will stay at home to take care of their little kids. The representatives of Free Trade Union of Educators and Scientists talked to the representatives of UNICEF and EU. They promised to help. The trade union representatives state that 70 nursery homes have been abolished and now they are prepared to be sold off.

Manana Ghurchumelidze is meeting Gigi Ugulava, Tbilisi Mayor regarding the abovementioned problems as of today.
