Investigation Launched Against Telavi District Governor

September 8, 2008

Kakheti regional prosecutor’s office started investigation on misuse of power by Telavi district governor and his staff. Zurab Begiashvili, the investigator-in-chief of the prosecutor’s office reported about the investigation.

The Human Rights Center appealed to the Prosecutor’s Office. The suit was drawn up based on information provided by the local residents. Locals blamed Zurab Butskhrikidze, the governor for involvement in illegal activities. More precisely, the Telavi governor prohibits the director of the Telavi Park “Nadikvari” to switch on the Ferris wheel that was officially opened in the presence of President Mikheil Saakashvili not long ago. The applicants reported that Telavi district governor intends to declare the Ferris wheel a scrap-iron and afterwards his plan is to purchase the park territory.

Zurab Butskhrikidze refrained from making any comment on the issue. According to the Prosecutor’s Office the governor was already interrogated regarding the criminal investigation.
