Appeal Provided to Georgian President Regarding TV Company “Maestro”

September 12, 2008

Georgian Public Defender, Sozar Subari applied to the National Commission for Communication Regulation and requested that TV Company “Maestro” be allowed to transmit social-political programs. Based on that request Mamuka Ghlonti, director of TV Company “Maestro” introduced the journalists with the appeal that has been addressed to the Georgian President.

“We are deeply concerned regarding the attitude of the government to the freedom of expression and opinion in Georgia. In fact, TV Companies are completely controlled by ruling political part that opposes basic democratic principles. The already difficult situation got even worse when the National Commission of Communication Regulations, which has been since transformed into a body for political censorship, and in turn has prohibited “Maestro” broadcasting social-political programs. Such an action completely based on unreasonable grounds. We demand to allow the Maestro to produce and broadcast social-political programs,” states the appeal to Mikheil Saakashvili.

Director of the TV Company “Maestro” distributed the appeal to journalists and asked them to sign the document to demonstrate their show of support to the presented appeal.
