Tsotne Gamsakhurdia: Offered Degrading Plea-Deal

Representatives of the Public Defender’s Office visited Tsotne Gamsakhurdia in Tbilisi penitentiary establishment # 8 and interviewed him.

Tsotne Gamsakhurdia stated in his interview that he has been on hunger-strike since September 4 because he was offered a degrading plea-bargains in exchange of his freedom. According to the deal, Gamsakhurdia had to admit his participation in the coup and after that he would have been discharged from the accusation of spying.

According to the public defender’s office, Tsotne Gamsakhurdia stated that he categorically demands the publicity and video-recording of his trial; because he thinks that one of the evidence the prosecutor’s office has nor his testimony should be held secret from public.

The detainee did not complain about the prison administration and personnel.

The Public Defender’s Office still continues to monitor the human rights situation in the establishments of the penitentiary department.
