Georgian- Ossetian School Meets the New School Year with Unsolved Problems

September 15, 2008

Areshperni Secondary School is the only school in Lagodkhi where pupils can receive education in both the Georgian and Ossetian language.

Ossetian and Georgian children will continue their studies from today- September 15th. However, only Georgian language reference books will be available for this school year.  Tamaz Kapanadze, the school principal stated that the problem was caused by the fact that they have been unable to bring reference books from Tskhinvali, as they had been bringing in previous years.

A rather successful Georgian-Ossetian school in Lagodekhi is facing other problems this year. The school bus that had been transporting students from neighboring Ossetian villages will not be able to operate this year as the Ministry of Education of Georgia has refused to pay fuel expanses.

“If the local government does not allocate  money for fuel expenses and the bus does not operate, tens of pupils from Bolkvi and Pichkhibogiri, ethnic Ossetian villages (these are the villages that are only several kilometers from Areshperni) will be deprived of the right of education,” told Tamaz Kapanadze, the school principal Radio Hereti.
