Appeal against the Keda Office of the Agency for Social Subsidies

September 18, 2008

Shushana Beridze, resident of the village of Varjanisi in Keda district has applied to the Adjara Human Rights Center office with a request for assistance in finding out how her family remained without social aid and to learn how many families are or are not receiving such assistance. “They are my neighbors and so I cannot tell you their names.  However, you can check that they live much better than I do.”

On July 23 the Human Rights Center officially applied to the head of the Keda district office of the Agency for Social Subsidies about the described situation. The center requested the information about the results of the determination that carried out with respect to this particular family. We inquired how the agent distributed the points for each part of Beridze’s house and for various their other property. Anyway, we have not received their reply as yet. Consequently the Human Rights Center brought a suit before the Ministry of Labor, Healthcare and Social Welfare of Adjara Autonomous Republic.

“The Keda district office of the Agency for Social Subsidies breached various terms related to the issuing of public information. This agency was obliged to release requested information in less than 10 days,” said Lali Iskhnelidze, the lawyer for the centre.

The resident of the village of Varjani added that she had applied to the agency for social subsidies several times and requested that they again carry out a poverty scoring of her family. However, Giorgi Takidze, the head of the agency, rudely responded to her and wanted to get rid of her.
