Georgians Forbidden in Akhalgori District

September 18, 2008

Ossetian militias have started persecuting Georgians for their ethnicity in Akhalgori District.

Zurab Pitskhelauri, Akhalgori District Governor told News agency Medianews that Ossetian criminal groups operating under the name of South Osseian Police follow the order of Ilo Khubulov, new head of the South Ossetian Police and bar Georgians from speaking in Georgian and Ossetians from communicating with Georgians.

“The shapes of ethnic persecution are forming little-by-little. Apparently, they want to clean the district of Georgians. They (Ossetians) opened a passport department and issue Russian passports there. Those who refuse to take Russian passport will be forced to leave the district. The new leaders of Akhalgori so called administration were invited to Tskhinvali today despite the fact that they returned from Tskhinvali only yesterday. They received instructions from South Ossetian president Kokoiti. I am waiting for their arrival so that I can meet them and familiarize them with the current situation,” said Zurab Pitskhelauri to Medianews.
