September 22, 2008

The 2008-2009 Academic year, is to be resumed today in the village of Perevi, Sachkhere district of Imereti region, an areas that has been under Russian occupation. The start of the school year was delayed as a result of the hostilities of early August and the Russian-Georgian war. Most students did not show up for the first day of school
Consequently the normal schedule was put not followed as a result of so few students. Only 20 school age children actually showed up to start classes for the new school year.  According to the information provided by Zurab Tsertsvadze, regional head of Sachkhere district schools, Russian occupying forces did not prevent the students from going to school and only now the students are slowing returning to their studies.
“Parents observed cautiousness as illicit checkpoints of Russians that are still positioned in the district. Moreover, most of local population fled elsewhere because of the events of August” he said. Zurab Tsertsvadze expects that the academic year will be fully restored in Perevei as of October 1.
Zurab Tsetskhladze told that the school was ready to start the school year: new inventory was brought to school and teachers had also arrived. However, only about 20 pupils appeared today for first day of the new school year.
