Deprived Property Owners in Kakheti Region will Protest on November 7 in Tbilisi

October 30, 2008
On November 7 the non-parliamentary opposition is planning to demonstrate in front of the Georgian parliament of Georgia. The proprietors of deprived property from Sighnaghi District will join the demonstration, informs Kakheti Information Center.

Manana Macharashvili, Tamar Tarashvili, Tamaz Gorelishvili, Gela Bezhashvili, Badur Milashvili and others were deprived off their property, in particular commercial units and houses that were taken by state officials. These proprietors were forced to give their property to the state and the people entrusted by the government. If they refused they were threatened with incarceration or other forms of pressure.

The deprived property owners addressed the Office of the Prosecutor General, Public Defender and other human rights organizations. The Prosecutor’s Office started investigation on the cases but as has been the standard, no result can be seen thus far.

Giorgi Ghviniashivli, Kakheti Regional Governor has recently promised the proprietors on Gurjaani TV Company on a live TV program that he would help them. However, the Regional Governor did not familiarize with cases of property deprivation in follow up to his promise.

The victims say they wanted to protect their interests using law. However, the situation they are facing leaves no other option but to join with the planned demonstration.
