Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs Statement on Murder of Roin Shavadze

The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs has come out with an official statement on the case of Roin Shavadze who was killed during the special operation of the Special Unit of MIA.

It is indicated in the statement of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, which was publicized via MIA Press Department that “on August 16, 2008 the Constitutional Security Department of the MIA received operational information and a preliminary investigation was opened against Roin Shavadze for purchasing and keeping a substantial amount of illegal drugs. This is a category of crime that falls under Subparagraph A, Part II of Article 260 of the Criminal Code of Georgia.

On the same day Roin Shavadze was detained as a suspect. He was searched and some suspicious substances were discovered on his person. According to laboratory analysis,    Shavadze had 0, 97 grams of non-process Heroin and 0, 05 grams of Buprenorphine. It was ordered that Roin Shavadze be moved to Tbilisi Isolator # 1 for detainees. The representatives of Operative Department of MIA Constitutional Security Department Adjara Autonomous Republic Main Division were instructed to move Roin Shavadze to Tbilisi. While escorting, on Kobuleti- Kakuti Car Road Shavadze asked for stopping an escort car because he needed to go to toilet. The car was stopped and an escorting police officer took the detainee out of the car. Shavadze managed to take a gun away from the police officer and attempted to escape. He shot the gun at the escort several times and damaged the escort car. His actions consequently jeopardized the life and security of Constitutional Security Department representatives. The escort had no choice but return the fire against Shavadze, which as a result of this Shavadze died of his wounds.

The Adjara Autonomous Republic’s Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the fact of Shavadze’s murder. The crime scene was examined by investigators, forensic, biological and ballistic expertise was assigned and witnesses were questioned. The investigation is under way. Roin Shavadze served in Senaki Battalion before he was killed, saw action in South Ossetia and did a tour of duty in Iraq.
