Ossetians Militias Begin Burning and Destroying Houses in Akhalgori District

November 13, 2008

Ossetian separatists and Russian soldiers have started burning and razing houses in Akhalgori District. They are setting fire to the wooden parts of houses. Instances of robbery under threat have become more frequent.

Zurab Pitskhelauri, the Akhalgori District Governor told Media News that the situation in Akhalgori District is rapidly deteriorating. He said that Ossetian militias are not holding back and are freely raiding houses in the district. Meanwhile, Russian soldiers beg for food, as they are starving.

“Only 20 % of the total population of the district has returned and most of them are Ossetians. However, even ethnic Ossetians are being terrorized by the militias, who exercise no mercy. The Ossetian militias have started looting houses in Kanchaveti village and in those located in the vicinity of Mosabruni village. They collect wood from destroyed houses and make fires to warm themselves. Locked houses are broken into and everything that is of value and easily transportable is looted. The Ossetian de facto Akhalgori administration left for Tskhinvali 10 days ago and no one knows when they will return. Neither police nor other legitimate bodies function in the district. The situation there is completely under the control of Ossetian militias. Meanwhile, Russians soldiers do nothing but beg for food from locals. Schools will stop functioning after a week because there are hardly any children left in the Akhalgori District to conduct classes,” Zurab Aptsiauri told Media News.
