MP Demands that General Pardon Covers AWOL Charges Too

November 17, 2008

Magdalina Anikashvili, member of parliamentary faction Christian –Democrats stated that it would be nice if the blanket general pardon covered those who were convicted according to Article 388, Criminal Code of Georgia, which is crime of AWOL.- being absent without leave from military duty.

The MP recalled the Augusts War at snap plenary session of the parliament and said many soldiers were convicted for AWOL due to August’s war. In particular, she said that after the August war the communication system was out of order, the military leadership was giving vague orders; there were also some other problems too. Consequently, the soldiers arbitrarily left military bases for two days to see their families and let them know that they were still alive.

Magdalina Anikashvili said that the general pardon should cover people charged with Article 388, Criminal Code of Georgia. She said this should be done to show that the government also takes some responsibility for events of the August war  with Russian over the breakaway region of South Ossetia. .
